I’m a Thriver

Did You Know?

In addition to the
recommended surveillance and
follow-up that’s part of your
survivorship care plan, it’s
important to keep on top of
your regular preventative
health screenings. Scanxiety is
the anxiety you may experience
during follow-up tests, which
is a normal response. Talk to
your healthcare team about any
concerns that you have.

Healthy living and lifestyle
changes can improve your
quality of life and help prevent
a recurrence, second cancer
and/or other health issues.1
Fear of recurrence is normal
and usually the most intense
the year after treatment. Be
open about your emotions and
take charge by managing your
stress.

As you transition into life beyond
cancer, there are many places you
can turn to for support. Ask your
healthcare team to recommend a
social worker to help you navigate
next steps and/or mental health
professional to help you manage
your emotions. You can also reach
out to a helpline and/or an online
support group
or discussion board
to connect with other people in
your shoes.

Intimacy after cancer can be
affected by treatment, self-image
and even your emotions. The
most common issues are pain
during sex, vaginal dryness,
difficulty with orgasm, erectile
dysfunction and/or low libido.2
Communication with your
partner is important. Talk to your
healthcare team about your
options, which may include
counseling, specific exercise
and/or medications.

Good nutrition can help you
take control of your health,
helping you recover and heal,
regain your strength, manage
any lingering side effects, and
reduce the risk of a future
cancer diagnosis.3 Learn
more about healthy options.

Regular physical activity can
lower the risk of recurrence of
certain cancers.4 There are many
benefits to exercise, including
improved heart and lung function and lessened cancer-related fatigue.5 It can
also help with issues such as
anxiety, depression, self-esteem
and happiness.6 Talk to your
healthcare team to make sure
certain exercises are safe.

There are millions of people across the globe who are cancer survivors or what we call—thrivers. Although many people are relieved when they’ve completed their primary treatment, transitioning into “life after cancer” can lead to many emotions and unanswered questions.

It’s important to work with your healthcare team to develop a personalized survivorship care plan after active cancer treatment ends. This will include a snapshot of your cancer care history and an overview of your follow-up care plan. Your survivorship care plan will include a summary of follow-up tests and the potential long-term side effects you may experience. In addition, it will provide you with the path forward for healthy living!
