The Tenets to Democratizing Health A Health Equity Manifesto

We live in a time of UNCERTAINTY, where trust in healthcare and science has been tarnished by legacy practices, and a world
that’s overflowing with misinformation. The most significant moments of our LIVES, the most meaningful actions we can take, are
often fueled by times of uncertainty. Embrace the power of transformative CHANGE and the path to OPPORTUNITY through the
respect of our fundamental rights.

HEALTH IS WEALTH. A healthy life is the most valuable, but also the most vulnerable currency of our lives. MY HUMAN RIGHT. I have a right to live a healthy life, regardless of who I am, where I live, what I believe or how much money I make. WHAT COLOR IS HEALTHCARE? Irrespective of the color of my skin, treat me as if I were a member of your family going through a challenging time. EMPATHIZE. You can try walking a mile in my shoes, but that’s nothing compared to walking a lifetime. TRUST IS FRAGILE. Trust takes time to build, seconds to break and an eternity to repair. Shift your mindset from how do we convince people to trust us to how do we become more trustworthy? BE CRYSTAL CLEAR. Transparency is the most disruptive innovation of the 21st century. RESPECT MY PRIVACY. I have the right to know and consent to who has access to my data and how it’s being utilized. I’M A HUMAN FIRST. Get to know ME as a person, along with my values and my beliefs -not just my disease. KNOW YOUR BIAS. No one is immune to implicit bias. Self-reflect on your thoughts…your behaviors, and your unintentional influences. EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS. Don’t surrender to a cookie cutter society. Take a social inventory. Diversify your networks outside of the brief interactions you have with people like me. EMBRACE THE POWER OF UNLEARNING. Strip away your preconceived beliefs and behaviors that have been imposed by your upbringing, education and the society we live in. SHOW ME THE DATA. Democracy depends on equitable access to and understanding of health information for all. WORDS DO MATTER. Translate healthcare speak into the language and context of my life. Give me subtitles to the foreign flick of healthcare. ACTIVELY LISTEN. Connection is a conversation between my life story and day-to-day experiences and the language of medicine. Take the time to “listen” between the lines.

RESPECT ME. GUIDE ME. PARTNER WITH ME. NOTHING ABOUT ME WITHOUT ME.
